Low Carbon e-book on Climate Change with ESD Framework for Sustainability Literacy of 7th Grader

Abstract. “Climate change and its impact on the environment” is a topic that is aligned with low-carbon principles to support the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework. However, there are not many books that explain low carbon education in depth. This research aims to develop an ESD-based low carbon education e-book to increase sustainability literacy, using the R and D method with ADDIE design. The e-book was developed based on the results of a needs analysis, then validated and tested for its suitability in learning to ensure its benefits in increasing sustainability literacy. Validation was carried out by subject, IT and pedagogy experts, as well as by 20 science teachers. Furthermore, its effectiveness on learning was researched by implementing e-books in classroom learning. The students involved were 40 grade 7 junior high school students at a private school in West Java, Indonesia. The results of the research show that the e-book developed meets the suitability of the book in terms of content, presentation techniques, grammar, graphics and ease of use (CVR index in the qualifying category, CVI index in the appropriate category). It was further found that the book, which is presented with various examples of low-carbon education, is attractive to students because the illustrations are fun for students and the functions displayed are updated according to the students' characters who are familiar with the world of IT. The results showed that the developed e-book met the feasibility of the book in terms of content, presentation technique, grammar, graphics, and ease of use (CVR index with qualified category, CVI index with appropriate category). In addition, the book, which is presented with different examples of low-carbon education, is interesting for students because the illustrations are fun for students and the functions displayed are updated according to the character of students who are familiar with the IT world. The results show that learning with other e-books can improve students' sustainability literacy in the medium category.
